Dark at 5:15: Design Your Entryway for the Dark
The clocks fell back and your entryway changed shifts. Three design decisions that keep the first room of your house working after dark — hooks at grab height, shoes under the bench, off-season up top.

The clocks fell back on Sunday, and every house in the Denver metro just changed shifts. It is dark at 5:15 now — before dinner, before homework is done, before most people are even home from work. The first room that feels it is the entryway, because that is where the day lands: coats, boots, bags, mail, all of it arriving in the dark, loaded down, one-handed.
An entryway that only works in daylight is not organized. It is just decorated. Here are the three decisions in the entryway above that survive the dark:
1 — Hooks at grab height. A coat lands on a hook, not the floor, when the hook is where your hand already is. Too high and you will not reach for it carrying groceries; too low and everything drags. Grab height means the landing happens without thinking — which is the only kind of system that survives a tired Tuesday in November.
2 — Shoes under the bench. Boots park below the seat and the walking path stays clear. In daylight, shoes in the walkway are clutter. In the dark, they are a trip hazard. Bench on top, shoes underneath, path open — nobody walks into the day they just took off.
3 — Off-season up top. The cubbies overhead hold what you do not need daily — the off-season gear, the extra hats, the once-a-month stuff. Hand level stays for what you grab every morning. When everything competes for the same shelf, nothing is findable at 6 AM in the dark. Zones by frequency fix that.
The November 15/15 update: our month-long declutter streak is at Day 5 — 75 items out, 375 to go. This week’s tip fits the season: start your 15 before 5 PM, while you can still see what you are sorting.
Your entryway does not need more storage. It needs decisions that hold up after dark. If yours stops working at 5:15, that is exactly the kind of reset we do — free consultations, seven days a week across Denver, Highlands Ranch, Parker, Lone Tree, Littleton, and Englewood.
