Winter Hasn’t Started Yet: The Colorado Garage-Prep Checklist
Me: nothing bad happened. The garage: winter hasn’t even started yet. It’s right — summer and winter share the same square footage, and only one season can win the front wall. Here’s the 4-move rotation that settles it before the first powder day.

Every November, Colorado garages run the same quiet argument. The bikes are where the skis need to be. The holiday bins are behind the camping gear. The paint cans are sitting exactly where the freeze will find them. Nothing bad has happened — yet. Winter just hasn’t started, and the garage knows it before you do.
The fix isn’t more storage. It’s a rotation: four moves, one afternoon, done before the first real storm instead of during it.
1 — Skis and boards to the front wall, now. Winter gear gets the prime zone while it’s the gear you’ll actually grab. The first powder day should not start with an excavation — if you have to move three things to reach your skis, the zone is wrong, not the morning.
2 — Bikes and summer gear up and back. Bikes go on hooks or the ceiling, camping and patio gear bins go to the back wall and the high shelves. Summer doesn’t leave the garage; it just stops standing in winter’s spot.
3 — Holiday bins reachable, not buried. You will want them in about three weeks, and you will want them all at once. Stage them at grab height now, while moving them is a choice — not on a ladder, in the cold, holding a strand of lights.
4 — Paint and liquids inside before freeze-thaw. Latex paint, cleaners, anything water-based quietly dies in a freezing garage — and Denver’s freeze-thaw swing splits cans that a steady cold wouldn’t. The inside closet or the basement shelf gets them before the first hard freeze, not after the first ruined can.
And the shovel: park it and the ice melt by the door today, so nobody is digging for them the morning it actually snows.
The November 15/15 update: our month-long declutter streak is at Day 7 — 105 items out, 345 to go. A garage rotation like this one is the fastest 15 of the month: every buried bin you surface is half the sort already done.
Your garage doesn’t need to be bigger. It needs the seasons in the right order. If yours is still arguing with itself, that’s exactly the kind of reset we do — free consultations, seven days a week across Denver, Highlands Ranch, Parker, Lone Tree, Littleton, and Englewood.
