Overhang the Caps
Overhang caps an inch on the inside and outside for a finished look and a drip edge that sheds water away from the wall face.
Glue and Cure
Glue every cap with block adhesive and let it cure a full day before any fires. Heat too soon weakens the bond.
Line the Inside
Line the fire chamber with fire-rated block or a steel insert. Regular block can crack under direct flame heat.
Keep Joints Tight
Ash will find every gap you leave it. Tight joints now mean less cleanup forever.
Pro tips from the field
- Dry-lay all caps first and shuffle them for the best color blend before gluing anything.
- A 1-inch overhang looks right on most pits. More than that and caps get kicked loose.
- Wait the full cure day. Lighting a fire on green adhesive is the most common DIY mistake we fix.
Common questions
Should fire pit caps overhang?
Yes — about an inch inside and out, for looks and a drip edge.
Do you need a fire-rated liner in a fire pit?
Yes. Regular block can crack under direct flame; use fire-rated block or a steel insert.
