Stagger Every Joint
Stack courses with staggered joints, like brickwork — no vertical seam should line up with the one below. This is what gives the wall its strength.
Adhesive on Every Course
Run a bead of landscape block adhesive on every course, not just the top. It flexes with freeze-thaw and keeps the walls locked together. Wipe the squeeze-out before it skins over.
Get the Height Right
Three to four courses is the sweet spot — roughly 18–20 inches finished, which doubles as comfortable seat-wall height around the fire.
Curved vs Straight Block
Curved block makes the circle easy. If you're cutting straight block to fit a curve, that's next-level patience — and a wet saw.
Pro tips from the field
- Back-butter the ends of each block, not just the bed. Full mortar-style coverage resists frost heave.
- Work in the shade if you can. Adhesive skins over fast in direct Colorado sun.
- Keep a damp rag in your pocket. Wipe squeeze-out immediately — cured adhesive doesn't come off.
