Set and Level Every Block
Set your first blocks on the compacted base and level every single one, front to back and side to side. Use a rubber mallet — not a hammer — and check with a 4-foot level across the whole circle.
Dry-Stack First
Dry-stack the full circle before any adhesive goes on to check your fit. It's much easier to adjust loose block than glued block.
The Payoff
A dead-level first course means every course above it stacks true. Rush this and you'll fight every layer after.
Pro tips from the field
- A 4-foot level is the minimum. A 6-foot level across the full circle catches dips the short one misses.
- Tap blocks down, never pry them up — lifting breaks the suction with the base and creates a soft spot.
- Number your blocks with chalk as you dry-stack so they go back in the same order after adhesive.
Common questions
Do you need adhesive on the first course of a fire pit?
Dry-stack the full circle first to verify fit, then adhesive as you set each course permanently.
